ZumoDrive is a new online file storage start-up currently in private beta that prides itself as offering “Hybrid Cloud storage for all your documents and media”. It’s both Mac, Windows, and iPhone compatible and free for storing less than 1GB of content. If you go over that amount you can upgrade to the 10GB plan for $2.99 per month ($0.30/GB). Currently the maximum allowed storage space is 200GB for $59.99/month ($0.30/GB).
The installation on my MacBook was a piece of cake. All I had to do was download the Mac or Windows based software, run the automated installation and within a few minutes I was done. Unfortunately, however, I ran into a small problem. At the end of the Mac installation a message appeared which read “MacFUSE Version Mismatch”. Upon receiving this error, I promptly searched for any similar postings in the ZumoDrive forums and reported the incident. I had also installed the desktop application on my Windows XP partition but did not experience any such problems like this whatsoever.

Everything seemed to work correctly without a hitch on the Mac desktop app until the next time I restarted my computer. When I did that, I noticed that all my files were gone, or so I thought. After checking my hard drive, I quickly discovered the problem; I now had two ZumoDrive folders (i.e. ZumoDrive and ZumoDrive1). My files were still the in ZumoDrive folder but the default folder was now the newly created ZumoDrive1 folder instead. I had also installed ZumoDrive on the same MacBook though the Parallels driven Windows XP virtual machine but I did not experience any problems whatsoever.

After contacting the ZumoDrive support team via their forum, I was told that indeed the MacFuse Version Mismatch error maybe the source of the problem given that Parallels, as well as VMware Fusion, bundles MacFUSE. Fortunately it appears that the folder mapping problem has been resolved and the ZumoDrive application mounts somewhat like an external device to avoid any such similar problems.

I’ve been testing ZumoDrive for several weeks now and, with the exception of not supporting the T-Mobile G1, I like it. It reminds me of DropBox and other online storage solutions that possess the drag-n-drop feature and the ability to sync files across multiple computers and devices. The desktop application has a nice look and feel and the navigation is straight forward. File sharing is easy and you can adjust the desktop app’s settings to throttle transfers. ZumoDrive also offers a nice feature that allows you to effortlessly import all your songs to iTunes (see video below).
A feature I would like to see implemented would be some type of security for the desktop application to prevent someone from accessing files on a shared computer. That’s a common feature request that most web storage services with desktop apps get quite often. The current solution is to create multiple user accounts on your computer and then password protect your own account. However, most people don’t want to create a new user account just for one application or may not trust their IT department at work. Thus they may instead be limited to not installing the desktop application on their work computer and just uploading/downloading content to their online storage provider via their browser while they’re at work.
I would love to see an internet storage service like ZumoDrive support Android based phones, especially the T-Mobile G1. To the best of my knowledge, Oosah is the only web based file storage service provider that offers an Android application but it is rated quite poorly (2/5 stars of 1k-5k downloads) and user comments indicate that it doesn’t function correctly. If ZumoDrive can offer an Android application that works, I’d bet they would have a heck of a leg up on their competitors and the would most likely get a nice boost in their number of registered users.
