WordPress recently launched a new site called WordPress.TV and, by the looks of it, it appears to provide how-to and instructional video tutorials for using WordPress. It is also expected to serve as a video repository for all things WordPress related such as interviews, presentations, and WordCamp footage.  According to the WordPress.TV blog:
“Our goal with WordPress.tv is simple:
To make it easy for you to find up-to-date, WordPress-themed video content within a couple of clicks. Without having to wade through spammy promotional videos, out-of-date content, and missing chunks of presentations.”
Currently, all the videos hosted on WordPress.TV are created by Automattic employees and the only way to interact with the new video site is through comments. It is unknown as to whether or not WordPress will later open up its video site to allow users to publish their own WordPress related videos on WordPress.TV. Automattic employees are now taking requests for new additions to the video library.
Here’s the introductory video explaining the new service:
This is a smart move by the executives at WordPress to help educate both new and current users as well as lower the barrier to entry for potential users that may be considering WordPress as their blogging platform. Indeed, 2008 was a stellar year for WordPress as Compete stats indicate the following:
- WordPress.com experienced 59.7% increase in monthly uniques
- WordPress.org unique visitors grew by 123.3%
- Pages per visit increased by over 35% for both WordPress.com and WordPress.org
WordPress.com also seems to be holding its own against Blogger despite Google having a great advantage in terms of being able to leverage its global strength and push users in to its native blogging platform. I expect to see WordPress.com close the gap in 2009 however as WordPress.TV will most likely act as a major instrument for adoption and adherence to the WordPress platform. Indeed 2009 should be a very prosperous and interesting year for WordPress and the blogging community as technologies like Facebook Connect, Google Friend Connect, and other social media technologies create bridges of opportunity and stimulating growth of the blogosphere.
