Verizon’s wireless broadband service is $59.99 per month with a $35 one-time activation fee. The least inexpensive data card will cost you only $29. The service plan is limited to 5 GB per month with the over limit fee set at $0.25 per MB. Users can expect download speed from 0.600 Mbps to 1.4 Mbps and upload speeds from 500Kbps to 800 Kbps.

Sprint’s wireless data plan is set at $59.99 per month with no activation fee. You can get a free mobile broadband card with a new 2-year contract. The data plan’s limit is set at 5 GB with an overuse fee of $0.05 per MB.

As you can see the chart below, Reqall and Dial2Do offer a lot of great features that rival that of Jott’s that can help you stay organized towards actually getting things done. In addition, Reqall provides instant messaging integration and a new feature described as a photographic memory storage (via Picasa web albums). Dial2Do is a solid competitor but it is lacking some of the frills that Jott and Reqall offer (e.g. apps for Outlook, iPhone, Blackberry). One feature not offered by Reqall or Dial2Do that I believe is worth the price for Jott is the group messaging ability. This is particularly indispensable for large organizations that require frequent communication and coordinated efforts of team members. If that’s not a core requirement for your specific needs however, I’m sure you’ll agree that Reqall and Dial2Do are both excellent free productivity enhancement alternatives.

Lately I’ve been seriously considering a professional logo for my own website. With so many online professional logo designers to choose from however, the decision has become quite difficult. Since I am going to be researching these already I thought that it only makes sense to share my findings with everyone. If you have used any of these logo design companies in the past please leave a comment to let us know if you had a good experience with them.

Within the companies listed below some offer free logo designs or DIY (do it yourself) logo creation tools that can help you keep your overall cost down. But unless you are a designer yourself you’ll probably be better off just hiring a professional. After all, your logo should be a shining representation of what your company is about and if your logo doesn’t shine, what does that say about your company? Some logo design companies also provide branding of your logo on promotional items, products, stationary, letterheads, business cards, shirts as well as provide other services like website design and web banner creation. If a logo designer indeed offers such additional products and services, they are frequently bundled into different packages/plans and you can usually save you lots of money in the long run for your company, especially if you’re in the startup phase of development.

I’ve created a comparison spreadsheet that reviews all the pertinent information of each online logo provider. This includes do it yourself (DIY) providers, custom made professional logo providers, pricing, support, days until delivery (turnaround), and whether or not they provide other services such as website design, banners, promotional products, stationary, and brochures. Most of logo providers also offer discounts on professionally printed business cards as part of their sales packages. I’ve coded the logo plans to indicate the number of designers, number of design concepts, and the number of revisions. For instance if a logo company’s Plan 1 is 1-2-3, that means that for that plan you would get 1 designer assigned to create two concepts of a logo for you and that you would get up to three revisions for your logo.

Etherpad acts, and currently looks, much like a wiki. As a user types in his/her text, their work is color-coded to easily differentiate one’s own text from another team member’s. Beyond collaborative text editing, the users can chat with one another in the sidebar as they continue to work on their project. Inviting others to join in the collaborative effort is easily done through email and private URL invitations. Etherpad permits you to create new workspaces, which gives it more of an online project management feel than traditional online document management applications.

I tested Etherpad myself and it works great. However, I ended up basically just chatting with the other user like it was an IRC room. I can’t really see people using it to write research papers or other similar writing intensive projects but I’m sure there are other instances in which it would be the perfect solution. Perhaps it would be a good fit for programmers that are collaboratively writing code or in the case of a conference call where you could ensure that both parties are privy to each other’s overall message by seeing both sets of notes in real time. I wonder if it could also fill a need in the class room to promote more interaction and participation? Regardless of who its target user is, Etherpad has created a great service that is easy and fun to use. You can <a href="http://etherpad.com/ep/about/screencast"rel="nofollow" title="Etherpad tutorial video" target="_blank">see Etherpad in action via their screencast video or you can <a href="http://etherpad.com/NCfv6gvdAZ"rel="nofollow" title="Etherpad testing pad" target="_blank">test it firsthand without registering.

There are several free domain appraisal services and website or blog valuation tools that are very simple to use and can quickly spit out a valuation estimate by just plugging in the domain in question. These estimates are primarily based on traffic data, PageRank, the age of the domain, the number of pages indexed by the major search engines, traffic rankings from Alexa, Quantcast, and Compete, directory listings such as DMOZ or Yahoo! Directory, and the number of backlinks. However some of these merely just base your website or blog’s value based on the domain name only (i.e. its word count, length, etc.) Below is a list of some of those free appraisal services and tools that we’ve found thus far. Feel free to leave a comment at the end of this article to inform us of any more of these such free tools.

While the tools listed above are fun to play with, they don’t really give you an accurate indication of the site’s real worth. An alternative would be to use a professional domain appraisal service that will research the specific site and domain and provide you with a valuation estimate for a nominal fee. There are several domain appraisal services available including the ones listed below.

<a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/i3102ar-xrzEHHNGGGGEGFJGOLNK"title="TDNAM.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">GoDaddy’s Domain Name Aftermarket - select the Domains tab, click on “Appraise a Domain” under the “Auctions & More” subcategory

<a href="https://sedo.com/appraisal.php3?tracked=&partnerid=43883&language=us"title="Sedo's domain appraisal service" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Sedo

Domain appraisal services like those listed above may provide a better indicator of a site’s value compared to the free automated site calculators but what they can’t tell you is the annual revenue the site generates via advertising and sales (i.e. affiliate, products, services). Additional important metrics for accurately accessing a website’s value include the number of RSS and newsletter subscribers,

WebsiteBroker is a really great resource for how to go about evaluating a website for which you are considering selling or purchasing. They provide helpful tips for both buyers and sellers as well as useful information on how to promote your own site and add value to it. One tool that’s especially helpful is their <a title="title="WebsiteBroker.com" rel="nofollow" WebsiteBroker's Website Valuation Tool" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.websitebroker.com/valuation.php" target="_blank">Website Valuation Calculator that takes into account a site’s traffic, income, expenses, and much more to give you a real indication of what a site is actually worth. Unlike the domain appraisal services or website value estimators described above, you will need to obtain the pertinent information (i.e. sales, ad revenue, etc.) about the site in question in order to effectively utilize this tool. Oh, and if you’re seriously considering purchasing a website, don’t just take the site owner’s word for it when it comes to the its earning potential; demand receipts and pay stubs that verify the seller’s claims.

If you have any favorite valuation tools, other than the ones listed above, that you think could be helpful to other readers, include them with your comments below. In addition, leave us some feedback on any of these tools or services after you test them out and let us know how accurate you think they are in predicting your blog’s real value.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F7AJKI?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001F7AJKI"title="16 GB Sandisk MicroSDHC memory card" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Memory Cards - You want to make sure you get plenty of memory for your new G1 and all that music, videos, photos, and documents that you’ll want to access on the go. I’d suggest getting a top quality memory card like Sandisk’s 16 GB MicroSDHC. You may also want get a USB reader for your memory card so you’ll be able to move files back and forth from your computer to your G1. In that case, the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WPDKRI?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000WPDKRI"title="8 GB Sandisk MicroSDHC card with reader" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sandisk 8GB MicroSDHC Memory Card with MobileMate Reader would be an excellent choice.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016XDWSM?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0016XDWSM"title="Wagan Solar Electronics Charger Panel 12W" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Chargers - When you purchase the G1 it comes with its own wall charger but not a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001J5ZXLQ?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001J5ZXLQ"title="Car Charger for T-Mobile G1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">car charger. So if you think you’re going to be on the road quite a bit you will want to get one of those. This is especially important if you’re going to be using the GPS quite a bit on your G1. That is, the battery time is significantly lowered by running the GPS system and the battery is only quoted for 3 hours talk time. If you’re gonna be away from any plugins for a while or perhaps you plan on going camping sometime soon you might checkout a solar battery charger for your phone as well.

Make sure you get a washable and reusable set of screen protectors that aren’t too thick and do not leave behind any adhesive when you remove them. You could also use a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FTen-One-Design-TI-AF25-102-Silver%2Fdp%2FB00174N3R0%3Fpf%5Frd%5Fp%3D413863801%26pf%5Frd%5Fs%3Dcenter-41%26pf%5Frd%5Ft%3D201%26pf%5Frd%5Fi%3DB00174N3OI%26pf%5Frd%5Fm%3DATVPDKIKX0DER%26pf%5Frd%5Fr%3D048DS67XW8F6FJ3Q274A&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325"rel="nofollow" title="Silver Pogo Stylus for T-Mobile G1" target="_blank">stylus pen to help prevent such wear and tear on your new phone. For various reasons a stylus pen can be very desireable when navigating the G1. A stylus pen can particularly helpful when using an app that requires selection specific area on the screen or when using the browser and attempting to select small links on a given web page.

Your G1 will come with its own combination headphones/microphone. However, you may have headphones of your own that you want to use. If that’s the case, you’re own headphones probably require a headphone jack plugin which the G1 doesn’t have. An easy fix for this is a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RUEAAO?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000RUEAAO"title="mini USB to headphone jack adapter for T-Mobile G1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mini USB to standard 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter. You can also entirely avoid this adapter requirement with a wireless solution such as a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SZ7C5I?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000SZ7C5I"title="Bluetooth Stereo Headset HBS-110" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bluetooth headset.

Gmail is soooo much easier to use and it works with practically everything. Outlook is bulky, it uses tons of resources, it hiccups quite frequently, and its really, really slow. If you’ve ever tried searching for a particular email in Outlook you know exactly what I’m talking about. It takes forever to search and the results it spits out are quite poor. Gmail’s search on the other hand is lightening quick and the results are dead on.

There’s a plethora of other reasons to use Gmail but for now, just signup for a Google account, if you haven’t already done so and go get your Gmail account. After you’ve done that, link your Google Account to your new G1 simply by selecting the Gmail app and entering your username and password.

If you’ve been using Outlook most of your life like me, then you probably have hundreds if not a thousand or so contacts that you’ve racked up. Don’t worry, this is not a concern and it takes just a few minutes to mobilize your contacts for the move. The 20 steps below will take you approximately 3 minutes to complete.

Here’s what you need to do after you’ve registered for a Gmail account and that account to your phone:

Connect your Windows Mobile smartphone to your computer

Run <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/activesync45.mspx"title="Microsoft ActiveSync" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ActiveSync to synchronize your contacts between your pc and phone

After the synchronization is complete, disconnect your phone

Open Outlook and go to File > Import and Export

Choose Export to a File

Click Next

Choose Comma Separated Values (DOS)

Click Next

Choose Contacts

Click Next

Click Browse and select Desktop

Click Finish

Login to your Gmail account

Click on ‘Older Version’ located in upper right hand corner of page

Click on Contacts link in left hand column

Look in the upper right hand side and click on Import

Click on Browse

Click on the contacts file you already saved to your Desktop

Click on Import Contacts button

You’re Done!

Your G1 will automatically synchronize with your Gmail contacts within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, check to make sure you have synchronization activated on your G1. You can do this by going to your Settings and selecting Data synchronization. Now touch the screen to checkmark Auto-sync, Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts.

If you have other email accounts that you regularly use, you can easily import them via pop mail to your Gmail account. Then you’ll be able to send and receive email from one central location using your different email accounts separately. Just click on the Settings link in your Gmail account and select Accounts. Under “Send mail as:” click on the Add email address link and follow the directions to add your other email accounts. Next, under the “Get mail from other accounts:” click on the “Add another mail account” link and follow the directions for adding the new mail account. Voila! Now you can check all your email from your Gmail account and send and receive emails from your various different emal accounts.

It’s not perfect, it currently doesn’t support Flash, doesn’t record video, and the camera is a bit slow to respond. Other than those issues, which will probably be improved with software upgrades, it shines in regards to just about everything else (i.e. email, web access, watching YouTube videos, etc.).

Because of a fraud alert that I placed upon my credit report, I had to visit a local T-Mobile store and verify my online purchase. After becoming aware that Walmart is a major distribution center of T-Mobile cell phones, I thought that I and Google, had made a huge mistake in choosing T-Mobile as a carrier. It’s not because I hate Walmart, after all they made it possible to cloth myself and my 5 siblings on an elementary school teacher’s salary as we were growing up. But rather I thought that the level of customer service would suffer in that these distribution points weren’t independent T-Mobile stores and I believed that this was the wrong target market for such a techie kind of phone. I was pleasantly surprised however, with the great customer service I received and the ease of use and overall friendliness of the G1. In light of this new information, I believe Google has made a brilliant choice and I expect to see sales of the G1 to soar.

The G1 is full of techie tools and features like a smartphone or iPhone but it’s also really easy to use like a consumer phone. It’s really a brilliant strategy by Google to maximize the distribution of the G1 while at the same time widening the scope of the targeted user base. Ultimately it should lead to greater G1 sales, more people accessing the mobile web via Google’s mobile browser, more search queries for Google, and another avenue for which Google to obtain revenue (i.e. mobile ads, Android, etc.). Let’s also not forget the mining of behavioral data and analytics that Google can obtain from the phone, the mobile browser, search, and Android itself.

I believe the next smart move for Google would be to bridge the gap from the desktop and laptop to our mobile devices. We can already check our Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google based services via their suite of Google Mobile services but I think Google should take it a step further. Look for Google to create (via Google App Engine) or purchase synchronization technologies that permit online storage and access of your data from anywhere. One of the online storage and offsite backup solutions such as SugarSync or Syncplicity may be a prime target for acquisition of this endeavor. The result would be a direct competitor to Apple’s MobileMe service but it would probably be slightly less expensive and could be integrated with the many more applications and tools that Google possesses (i.e. search, Google Docs, etc.).

Android, Google’s mobile platform, is an open source operating system that allows 3rd party developers to create innovative, useful mobile applications for consumers. Many of them are free for use and can be installed on your G1 with a simple click of a single “install” button. This is great not only for the consumer but for Google and the outside developers too. That is, it allows the consumer to customize their phone to meet their own needs via the numerous available apps, it creates jobs by allowing developers to create new innovative applications, and it helps Google further develop their mobile platform while keeping some of their costs down. For those reasons, an open source or API based approach toward developing a technology is in my opinion the best way to go and why Sprint, despite their great network and crappy leadership, is failing.

I had initially <a href="http://tomuse.com/iphone-g1-compare-pricing-speed-test-keyboard-specs/"rel="nofollow" title="iPhone vs G1">considered purchasing an iPhone as it too provides lots of flexibility and tons of great features. However, I couldn’t get past the tangible need to have a real keyboard at my fingertips (a primary reason why I love my Moto Q). I don’t know how any iPhone user can stand to peck key by key at a virtual keyboard and not get frustrated by how long it takes them to simply type-in a few words, let alone a full sentence or text message. In contrast, the G1’s feature set and abilities rivals that of the iPhone and gives me a large physical QWERTY keyboard to boot.

src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

I finally pulled the trigger and purchased the T-Mobile G1 last Monday and to my surprise it arrived in the mail the following Wednesday. T-Mobile was offering a pretty great price for new customers that signed a 2-year contract. I added the unlimited data and text messaging plan and a MyFaves service plan as well. After charging it overnight and stuffing it with a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WH6H1M?ie=UTF8&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000WH6H1M"rel="nofollow" title="8 GB Sandisk MicroSD card" target="_blank">8 GB Sandisk MicroSDHC memory card I was able to start tinkering around with it the very next day. I found it delightful that synchronizing my Google Account with my new G1 was a total breeze. Within a matter of seconds I was already emailing friends, reading my favorite feeds (Google Reader), and testing out my calendar.

One of the biggest changes for me, a Windows Mobile based Moto Q user, was the ability to connect to surrounding Wi-Fi networks. I previously didn’t have the pleasure of using Wi-Fi on my Moto Q. I’m not sure I actually needed it then since I was using Opera Mini (very fast mobile browser) on Sprint’s speedy network, but it really does make a huge difference when it comes to download speeds and webpage loading times.

Besides the regular stuff that comes with today’s smartphones (i.e. email, web access, etc.) the G1 comes stocked with lots of other great features and functions such as:

Touch screen

Tracking ball (operates like a mini mouse)

Virtual dial pad

Instant messaging via AIM, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger

3 MP camera

Ability to access your Yahoo! email account via pop mail - something not normally accessible without a paid Yahoo! account

Ability to effortlessly watch YouTube videos

Download and open documents easily via Google Docs

Google Maps

GPS integrated with Google Maps

Google’s super fast mobile web browser

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/b?%5Fencoding=UTF8&site-redirect=&node=163856011&tag=tom05-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325"rel="nofollow" title="Amazon MP3 Downloads" target="_blank">Amazon MP3 easy downloads and inexpensive prices for DRM-free music

Google’s free 411 service

Data synchronization

Expandable memory

So far I’ve been able to test out quite a few of the Android Market applications and games with my top favorites being:

The <a href="http://www.android.com/market/"rel="nofollow" title="Android Market website" target="_blank">Android Market is still somewhat in is infant/toddler stage and it is still primed for more developers to enter and create some fantastic new apps. Some applications that I would like to see added in the near future include:

A file manager that allows me to access my folders, files, and storage card

A great RSS reader app like Feedly

A mobile/location based social network like Loopt or BrightKite

Facebook

This is only my 6th day of testing and I am still yet to kick all the tires and hit the highway to see what this baby can really do. But so far the only real criticism I can find is that the camera is a tad bit slow to respond. Other than that, I’m practically in love with my new G1. I’ll follow this post up with some real download speed tests, more application testing, and hopefully a bit of criticism…that is, if I can find any

It’s unique in that it provides users with one of the most simple and private interfaces to share digital content via user-created and controlled, points called ‘drops’. Users are able to easily and seamlessly create these personal sharing points and upload their content through various different input channels such as the web, email, social networks, phone and fax. Users are then able to share this content with their friends, family and colleagues through drop.io’s various outputs (web, sms, Twitter, fax, iTunes, etc.). Each ‘drop’ is non-searchable and exists separately from other drops and does not require any type of account registration. The drops are password-protected and set to expire based on the need of the user.

Some of the new applications that are taking full advantage of the developer friendly API, and which took no more than a few hours to build, include:

Usend.io - A super easy way to send large files via email

<a href="http://github.com/whoisjake/twitterslurp/tree/master"title="Twitter Slurp" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">TwitterSlurp - Allows you to search Twitter messages for specific keywords or phrases and adds them to a drop

Collab.io - Permits easy collaboration of a meeting topic

<a href="http://hahayoureinaphoto.com/"title="Ha Ha You Are In A Photo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ha Ha You’re in a Photo - A dead simple way for users to upload and comment on photos

Drop.io is indeed pushing the development envelope of online storage and sharing utilities. With their new API they have now extended these abilities to developers. Furthermore, Drop.io has successfully leveraged the integration of Amazon Web Services into their platform to put these tools into the hands of their users and allow them the ability to easily monetize their own digital content via Drop.io’s <a href="http://drop.io/faq#26"title="Drop.io Paywall" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Paywall feature. Those close to Drop.io have told us to expect a big upcoming announcement within the next few weeks as well. To learn more about Drop.io and its online storage and sharing abilities visit their website or <a title="title="Drop.io" rel="nofollow" Drop.io API" rel="nofollow" href="http://api.drop.io/" target="_blank">API homepage.
