StumbleUpon is a free social bookmarking site that enables you to share and discover web content. When signing up for a new account, the user indicates his/her interests from a keyword list. These likes are then used to identify and suggest web content (i.e. websites, videos, games, pictures, etc.) to you.
During registration, a simple toolbar is installed on your IE or Firefox browser. This toolbar allows you to browse the recommended web content by category or by simply clicking on the “Stumble” button which randomly redirects you to suggested content. Upon visiting a recommended site, you can rate it with a thumbs up or with a thumbs down rating system. Thumbs up indicates that you like the content and it is automatically saved in your StumbleUpon bookmarks under its tagged category.
StumbleUpon also enables you to meet and interact with others by suggesting you potential new friends or “stumblers” that have similar interests. You can contact each other by sending personal messages onsite or by interacting through groups, forums, and the chatroom.
The newest addition of StumbleUpon is Stumble Video. This feature allows users to bookmark, tag, and suggest videos from Google Video, YouTube, and MySpace to your friends and other StumbleUpon users. It also lets you suggest videos to your friends through email.
StumbleUpon is a wonderful web tool that has revolutionized web surfing and has made it fun again. Before using StumbleUpon, the only way to discover new, interesting content was to wade through the junk on search engine queries or “stumble upon” it accidentally. StumbleUpon eliminates this problem and directs you to great, interesting content every time.
What I Like:
It’s fun
Easy to use
User friendly interface with intuitive design
Saves bookmarks under tagged categories automatically
Social networking capabilities
Ability to send and suggest content to friends
Enables you to actually “browse” the web, not just search it
More effective way to find content that interests you
What I Dislike:
Nothing, except for the cruddy chatroom
