Social City is a city based simulation game created by Playdom that can be played on Facebook. Our Social City strategy guide will explain how to play Social City, how to win lots of coins, and great Social City tips to help you win in the game. As we continue to update this guide to reflect new features added by Playdom, please feel free to submit your own strategy tips for the game by using the comment form link below. Doing so helps keep the guide up-to-date and assists other players in finding success too. Getting Started – After installing the application, you will be walked through a brief tutorial. This tutorial will show you the basic steps of creating buildings and collecting from them. Once you are finished with the tutorial, you can begin building your city.
Building factories – To build a factory, you will need to open the factory panel. To do this, click on the Hard Hat tab at the bottom of your game. When you place your mouse over the tab, it will say Build. Click on that tab and the panel will load. Now you will need to click on the second tab in this panel. This tab is called Factories. Once you click on this tab, you will see the factories that you can purchase. You may not be able to purchase anymore until you get more citizens. If you can purchase a factory, click on the factory and select the location you want to place it in your city. Then click on the green check mark to the right of the panel to close the build panel. If you can’t purchase factories right now, you will need to focus on buying residential buildings instead.
Collecting from factories – When factories are ready to be collected from, you will need to click on them. You will then see your coins and experience points appear on the screen. To find out if your factories are ready, simply place your mouse arrow over the factory in question.
Cleaning factories – Before you can create a new contract for the factory, you will need to clean your factory. After you collect from the factory, click on the factory again to clean it. Once it is clean, you can start a new contract.
Creating new contracts – After cleaning your factory, click on the factory again and the contract window will open. Browse through this window and find the contract that you want to buy. Then click on the Buy button and your factory workers will start working again.
Building residential homes – Residential homes are required to provide your citizens a place to live. To build these homes, you will need to click on the Build tab at the bottom of your screen again. This time when the panel loads, you will need to click on the first tab which is the residential tab. Then you will see the residential buildings you can choose from. click on the one you want to purchase and then click on your city to place the home. Finally click on the green check mark at the end of your panel to return to your city.
Collecting citizens – When your citizens are ready to be collected, all you have to do is click on the home. Your citizens will then be added to your city’s population count.
Adding leisure buildings – Leisure buildings are needed to keep your citizens happy and keep them residing in your city. To build leisure buildings, you will need to click on the build tab again. This time, click on the third tab in the panel. That will load your leisure buildings and you can click on the one you want to purchase. Then you will need to click on the place in your city that you want to build the building. When you are ready to return to your city, click on the green check mark.
Buying terrain – If you want to decorate your city with trees, bushes, and other items, you can do so by selecting the build tab. Then you will need to look for the terrain tab which should be the fourth tab in the panel. When the terrain loads, you will see the different trees and things that you can purchase. To purchase something, click on it and then place the terrain where you want it.
Building roads – Building roads is a great way to expand your city. All you have to do is click on the build tab and then click on the road tab. The regular roads are free but the parking lots are not. To build a road, click on the road icon and select where you want it placed.
How much longer do my buildings have? – To find out how much longer your buildings have until they are completed, simply mouse over them. When you place your mouse arrow over your buildings, you will see a box pop up that tells you the remaining time.
Moving buildings, roads, and other items – The Social City game allows you to easily move buildings, roads, trees, and any other items in your city. To move these items, click on the item you want to move. Next, select the Move option and click somewhere else in your city to place the item.
Selling buildings, roads, and other items – Besides creating and moving items, you can also sell your Social City items. When you sell your roads, you will not get anything for them. Unfortunately, this is the only way to remove your roads. You will, however, receive money for any other items that you sell in Social City. To sell something, click on it and select the sell option to see how much you can get for it.
I can’t select buildings or other items – In order to click on items that are to be moved or sold, you have to be in the build mode. To access the build mode, click on the Build tab at the bottom of your screen. The screen will change and you can then click on the items to sell them or move them.
Viewing contracts – To see the available contracts, click on the contract tab and use the arrows to browse through the current contracts. When you’re finished, click on the X in the top right corner of the box to close it.
Taking photos of your city – Taking photos of your city is a great way to show it off and keep up with your progress. The first time you take a photo, you will be asked to allow the app to create an album on your profile and upload photos to it. This is where all your Social City photos will be stored.
Turning music and sound on/off – The music and the sounds in the game can quickly become annoying. Thankfully, you can turn both the sound and the music off very easily. On the left side of your screen, is the sound icon and the music icon. Clicking on each of those icons one time will turn the sound or music off. Clicking on each one again will turn them back on.
Viewing news – When there is news to be shared in Social City, you can find it in your news tab. At the bottom of your screen, you will see the newspaper tab. Click on this news tab to read about any new Social City news updates. If nothing loads in this window when you open it, there are no new announcements for the game.
Changing the name of your city – If you want to change the name of your city, click on New City in the upper right corner of the screen and enter the new name.
City information – You can find out information about your city such as how many factories you have, population, and the number of neighbors by clicking on your city’s name in the top right corner of the screen.
Zooming in and out – On the left side of your screen, is a row of icons. In this row of icons are two little silver plus and minus icons. Click on the minus sign icon to zoom out and the plus sign to zoom in.

How to earn coins – There are many ways to earn coins in Social City. To earn coins, you will need to purchase factories. Factories will earn you the most coins. You will also earn coins by cleaning your factories. Daily bonuses are rewarded too which will earn you coins. Helping your friends with their cities will earn you coins also. When you are rewarded with awards, you will also be rewarded with coins.
How to earn city bucks – The only “free” way to earn city bucks is by filling out offers and surveys. Other than that, city bucks will have to be purchased. You can get more city bucks by clicking on the Get City Bucks tab at the top of your screen. When the page loads, you will see the different packages that you can purchase. Below the packages will be the offers you can fill out to obtain free city bucks.
Earning experience points – You will need to earn experience points in order to advance to greater Social City levels. Leveling up will unlock new items that you can purchase later on. You can earn experience by cleaning your factories, buying buildings, collecting from buildings, and winning awards.
What level am I on? – Your Social City level is located at the top of your screen. Beside the level indicator, you will see a number. This is the level you are currently on. In the bar, you will see two numbers. The number on the left is how many points you currently have and the number on the right is how many points you need to reach the next Social City level.
Sending / receiving gifts – Sending gifts to your friends will help them expand their city. You can send a gift by clicking on the Free Gifts tab at the top of your screen and selecting the gift you want to send. On the following page, you’ll need to select the friends that you want to receive the gifts.
When you receive gifts for Social City, can be found on the request page of your Facebook profile. The link is found at the top right corner of the Facebook homepage while you’re logged in. You can click on the See All link to see what gifts you have waiting and you can click on the Accept button to accept gifts for the Social City game.
Using gifts – To use gifts that you have already accepted, click on the Gift tab on your screen. You should then see a gift box open that contains all the gifts you have previously accepted. To use a gift, click on the Use button and click somewhere in your city to place the gift. If you have more gifts, you will need to click on the Gift tab again and select another gift.
Inviting friends to play – Having friends in Social City will benefit you in two ways. One, you can send them gifts and they will probably return the favor. Two, you can visit them daily to earn coins. To invite friends to play the game, click on the Invite Friends tab at the top of your screen. When the window opens, click on the box next to the friends that you want to send the invitation to. If they accept your request, you will see them in your friends bar at the bottom of your screen.
Visiting friends – Visiting friends is an easy way to earn Social City coins. To visit a friend, click on the friend’s image at the bottom of the screen. When their city loads, you will see a box pop up and it will ask you to help them. If you decide to help them you will be rewarded with Social City coins.
Expanding your city – As you build your city you’ll quickly find out that space is limited. To expand your city, you will need to click on the Build tab at the bottom of your window. Then select the last tab in this panel called the City Limits tab. When you click on this tab, you will see your options for expanding your city. To expand, click on the plot you want and your city will automatically be expanded. Each expansion requires you to have a certain amount of Social City neighbors before you can take advantage of this feature. To avoid this requirement, you may purchase city bucks and use them to expand your city instead.
City population – Your city population is what keeps your city going. You must have homes for your citizens to live in and you should have leisure buildings for entertainment purposes. The more you build, the more people you can attract and collect money from. You’ll also need citizens in order to buy new factories. To find out how many citizens you have, look in your top right corner of the screen. There you’ll will see the words City Pop and a number that represents your city’s population.
How to tell if your citizens are happy – You can tell if you citizens are happy by the face that’s located in the population box in the upper right hand corner of your screen. If the face is smiling, your citizens are happy. If it is not smiling, then your citizens are unhappy.
How to make your citizens happy – Once your citizens become unhappy, they will begin to leave your city. To keep them happy, upgrade your city with leisure buildings like basketball courts and fast food places. If your citizens are unhappy, buy a couple of these Social City items and their mood will change.
Trading city bucks for coins – To obtain more Social City coins you may trade in your Social City bucks. In the left corner of your screen, are the coin and city bucks numbers. Beside that box, is a small blue button that if clicked will let you know how much you can trade and what you may receive in return. To complete a trade, click on the Exchange button and following the directions you are given.

Buy contracts that fit your schedule – When you collect from a factory and you’re ready to buy another contract, make sure to obtain contracts the fit your schedule. If you can’t login within 20 minutes to collect from your factory, don’t buy a 20-minute contract. Factories will expire quickly and if they do, you may lose your money.
Send gifts to your friends – Send your friends gifts to encourage them to return the favor. Sometimes you can get excellent gifts from high level friends that you wouldn’t normally be able to obtain otherwise.
Close your building panel – If you open your building panel to buy something, it is important to close it when you’re finished. If you do not close the panel, your city will not operate correctly.
Increase your population quickly – If you really want to build up your population quickly, buy homes that can be quickly built. Some of the homes are ready in as little as 8 to 15 minutes.
Keep your citizens happy – It is important that you keep your Social City citizens happy. If they become unhappy, they will leave your city. You can keep them happy by continuing to add leisure buildings to your city as you expand it.
Expand your city – Adding more buildings and space to expand will greatly increase your Social City profits. That is, the more buildings and homes you have available, the more Social City money you can collect.
Help Social City friends – Assisting your Social City neighbors by sending them gifts or visiting their city to help them is a great way to receive gifts, and earn Social City experience points or coins for yourself. That is, most Social City players will reciprocate the behavior you display towards them. Hence, the more Social City friends you help, the more Social City coins and gifts you may receive in return.
Don’t be a nuisance – As you play the Social City game, you’ll be prompted to share your accomplishments with your friends. Use this sparingly as it can become quite a nuisance to your Facebook friends and they may unfriend you if you do it too often. Speed up your game – If you’re encountering slow page loads you may want to try changing browsers. Faster browsers like Opera and Google Chrome can alleviate this issue so you can just focus on playing the game.
Why are you requesting the add? – When you send out an invitation for someone to join you on Social City, make sure you include a short message telling them why they should add you. Saying something like “Social City” or “Social City add” in the message box will inform them of your reasons and you’ll have a greater chance of getting the add.
Join Social City fan pages – Increasing your Social City neighbors is an important aspect of the game as it unlocks items and directly/indirectly helps you earn more coins and gain the experience points necessary to level up. To find more interested players, join the various Social City groups and fan pages. Upon visiting these pages, you can add other members to your list of Social City neighbors and post your profile link so they can add you too.
