web securityTrying to keep up with all your user IDs and passwords can be a pain. To manage this problem most people use the same user ID and password for everything. This is a big mistake and huge security risk. All it takes is one crooked administrator to find out which sites that user accesses (i.e. banking site, credit card site, etc.) and voila! The user’s identity, money, and credit are instantly gone. Another reason to not use one single easy to remember password is the fact that these kind of passwords are not strong, lengthy, and difficult to hack like those that incorporate numbers, case-sensitive letters, symbols, and other characters.

A more secure alternative is to use a password manager (PM). In addition to saving your user IDs and passwords, most PMs fill web forms, automatically generages strong encrypted passwords, and protect you against keylogging and phishing scams. RoboForm (Windows) and 1Passwd (Mac) are excellent PMs that work seamlessly with your browser.

A free trial version is available for both and can be upgraded at anytime for the paid version. Upon reaching the end of the trial period, if you choose not to upgrade it is likely, however, that your PM will stop working (as did my RoboForm trial version).

What I Like:

  • Never forget user ID or passwords again
  • Take it with you via portable flash drive
  • Print out your saved userids and passwords
  • Create multiple identities
  • Generates strong, lengthy, encrypted passwords
  • Access any registered site with the click of one button
  • Faster access to registered sites
  • Running list of sites you have recently visited
  • Prevents keylogging, phishing scams, and security risks
  • Saves offline passwords too; ATM, safe deposit box, etc.
  • Works great will all major browsers
  • Reasonable price (~$25-$30)

What I Dislike:

  • Must pay for portable version of RoboForm separately
