oneforty logo Oneforty: The App Store Twitter Should Have CreatedThe success of the Apple App Store has lead to nearly every platform creating a similar enterprise – from Blackberry, to Samsung, to Facebook. With the Apple store having surpassed 2 billion downloads everybody else wants to copy their success. Everybody that is, except Twitter. Once again Twitter seems determined to find ways to not generate revenue. However, the just launched oneforty, named for Twitter’s now famous character limit, is prepared to fill the void and be your Twitter outfitter.

While oneforty is still fairly new, it’s already “tracking 1737 apps that make Twitter even better.” Granted, Twitter already lists applications but this list isn’t promoted by Twitter and it’s pretty difficult to search. Twitdom also has an application database which includes reviews and ratings but it doesn’t have the marketplace focus that oneforty possesses.

Oneforty’s home page highlights a featured app, an essentials list, a popular list, and a category menu to make it easy for you to locate the Twitter application that best fits your needs. Using oneforty is dead simple as you can sign in via your Twitter account and, just like Twitter itself, the interface is very clean and uncluttered. Each listing for an app or service includes a detailed description of its features, screenshots, the app’s developer, recent tweets about the app, and any press coverage. In addition, you can vouch for the app by clicking on the “I use this” to add the app to your user profile and be listed on the app’s page as a user.

Unlike Twitter, oneforty has a clear revenue model which they so proudly outline in their FAQ: “Like other app stores, oneforty keeps a percentage of the transaction price of items sold by our marketplace. We also earn affiliate revenues and are exploring additional services for developers, businesses and the community.” While everybody loves free applications, oneforty strongly believes that “Developers deserve a fair marketplace to sustain their work”. Oneforty’s impressive Twitter application directory not only helps Twitter developers but it provides a great resource for Twitter users. It’s so good that I’d be quite surprised if Twitter didn’t copy or buy it in the near future.
