YouMail is a free next generation voicemail service that is much more flexible than your traditional voicemail and, dare I say, actually fun to use! To activate your account all you have to do is register and forward your messages to YouMail’s voice messaging service. Once you have the service set up you can easily record your own greeting message for incoming callers, upload any audio file to use as your greeting, or choose from a library of free YouMail greeting messages. Here’s one of my favorites:
YouMail even lets you assign different greetings for different callers and it can also greets each caller by name (via Smart Greetings) if you wish. Unwanted callers (i.e. pesky ex or telemarketer) can be screened and automatically hung up on before they can leave voicemail, thereby leading them to believe your number is no longer in service.
Another great benefit of using YouMail is that it notifies you via email and SMS when someone leaves you a voicemail and it attaches the actual audio and transcribed text version of the voicemail to the email/SMS. This can be very helpful during those times when you can’t have your ringer on or when you don’t have your phone with you. Thus if your ringer was off because you were in a meeting, you could still check your messages via SMS and if you didn’t have your phone with you, you could check your messages via your email.
YouMail also makes sharing your voicemail messages easy too. You can do this by simply forwarding a voicemail you received in your email or by directly accessing your YouMail account. YouMail even lets you download your voicemails for easy archival of memorable messages and moments. One other added benefit for me was being able to use my cell phone as an alarm clock without being awakened by people calling in the middle of the night. Conveniently, YouMail allows me to leave my phone on while I sleep and it catches all those late night wrong numbers without waking me up!
