Add Contacts To G1If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to make the move from Microsoft Outlook to Gmail, especially if you’re a T-Mobile G1 owner since it’s the primary email app on your new Android based phone. Gmail is soooo much easier to use and it works with practically everything. Outlook is bulky, it uses tons of resources, it hiccups quite frequently, and its really, really slow. If you’ve ever tried searching for a particular email in Outlook you know exactly what I’m talking about. It takes forever to search and the results it spits out are quite poor. Gmail’s search on the other hand is lightening quick and the results are dead on.

There’s a plethora of other reasons to use Gmail but for now, just signup for a Google account, if you haven’t already done so and go get your Gmail account.  After you’ve done that, link your Google Account to your new G1 simply by selecting the Gmail app and entering your username and password.

If you’ve been using Outlook most of your life like me, then you probably have hundreds if not a thousand or so contacts that you’ve racked up. Don’t worry, this is not a concern and it takes just a few minutes to mobilize your contacts for the move.  The 20 steps below will take you approximately 3 minutes to complete.

Here’s what you need to do after you’ve registered for a Gmail account and that account to your phone:

  1. Connect your Windows Mobile smartphone to your computer
  2. Run ActiveSync to synchronize your contacts between your pc and phone
  3. After the synchronization is complete, disconnect your phone
  4. Open Outlook and go to File > Import and Export
  5. Choose Export to a File
  6. Click Next
  7. Choose Comma Separated Values (DOS)
  8. Click Next
  9. Choose Contacts
  10. Click Next
  11. Click Browse and select Desktop
  12. Click Finish
  13. Login to your Gmail account
  14. Click on ‘Older Version’ located in upper right hand corner of page
  15. Click on Contacts link in left hand column
  16. Look in the upper right hand side and click on Import
  17. Click on Browse
  18. Click on the contacts file you already saved to your Desktop
  19. Click on Import Contacts button
  20. You’re Done!

Your G1 will automatically synchronize with your Gmail contacts within a few minutes.  If it doesn’t, check to make sure you have synchronization activated on your G1.  You can do this by going to your Settings and selecting Data synchronization.  Now touch the screen to checkmark Auto-sync, Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts.

If you have other email accounts that you regularly use, you can easily import them via pop mail to your Gmail account.  Then you’ll be able to send and receive email from one central location using your different email accounts separately.  Just click on the Settings link in your Gmail account and select Accounts.  Under “Send mail as:” click on the Add email address link and follow the directions to add your other email accounts.  Next, under the “Get mail from other accounts:” click on the “Add another mail account” link and follow the directions for adding the new mail account.  Voila!  Now you can check all your email from your Gmail account and send and receive emails from your various different emal accounts.
