Facebook’s social networking platform continues to grow and mimic nearly every great service on the web. Twitter is probably the most victimized out of all services Facebook has copied. Such features include the Facebook news feed and the currently beta update to the Publisher which will allow you to post content that everyone can see and not just your Facebook friends (i.e. much like Twitter profiles). In the past few weeks I’ve found myself spending more and more time on Facebook and I’ve identified a few other features I’d like to see Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook developers incorporate into the popular social network.
1. Starred Messages like Gmail – Akin to Gmail, Facebook’s messaging service already lets your mark your messages as read and unread. But you can’t emphasize important messages like Gmail permits by “starring” them. Better yet, why not allow Facebook users to create folders or tags to organize their messages?
2. Ability to remove people from your news feed – Yes, you can already do this by “hiding” them but that removes them from any friend lists you’ve created too. I want the ability to remove people I’ve mistakenly allowed into my default profile feed. Currently the only way I’m aware of that allows you to do this is upon confirming people as friends. If I’m mistaken, or you know how to do this, please comment and let us know how to accomplish this task.
3. To ban people from a Facebook fan page – I know you can already do this by using the “report” feature but I don’t want to get anyone in trouble. I just want an easy way to prevent trouble makers from posting to my Facebook fan page’s wall.
4. Export my news feed and fan page “links” – This will probably never happen as I believe Mark Zuckerberg wants to keep everything internally walled off so he can leverage the power of Facebook to chip away at every popular web service known to man. Hence, the mimicking of Twitter features and other popular features Facebook has incorporated. I’m sure we’ll soon be able to import RSS into our Facebook news feeds as well. At that point, I’m not sure what the advantage of using FriendFeed would be.
5. Import email or export Facebook messages – Wouldn’t it be great to have an all-in-one solution that let you check email, Facebook messages, and Twitter messages? Google Wave will be able to solve this problem for email and Twitter integration but again, Facebook messages are inaccessible from external interfaces. I know there are other Twitter clients like Seesmic that combine Twitter and Facebook but that doesn’t completely address my desire to monitor email. I’ve tried Digsby but I can’t stand those pop-up messages and it always seems to be notifying me of outdated emails and old status updates. Perhaps a Facebook application for Gmail would suffice? Better yet, I wish I could simply forward incoming Facebook messages to a my Gmail account.
