Thanks for this comparison on Intense Debate vs Disqus commenting systems. We had tried Disqus and had problems with importing existing WP comments into Disqus. Plus, the integration and interface of Disqus with the Wordpress backend was less than ideal, as it used some kind of frames and the setup looked a bit messy. However, it does seem to be packed with alot of features.

Since this posting was made, Intense Debate seems to have covered the Facebook connect and Twitter login options too among others like OpenID.

It might be an idea to go into the spam filter aspects of these applications as well.

I've just installed disqus, and I notice that is has slowed everything down considerably...is this normal?

After a brief dalliance with Intense Debate left me feeling somewhat disinterested I moved to Disqus and I'm happy.
No doubt about it, it's a hard decision, both platforms are very good.
The motivator to install something more than the standard Wordpress comment system for me, and I assume many others, was the desire to integrate and aggregate both my on site and off site comment activity.
The clincher for me was that Discus allows the editing of comments, and replies after I have submitted them, and Intense Debate does not - not without any messing about anyway.
I have to say I'm very happy with the Disqus interface and it's working quite quickly on my site so far.

Disqus seems to have fixed the problem; blog is not hanging on comment system loading anymore :) Best way to get a hold of anyone is via Twitter nowadays.

ID isn't slow all the time. But sometimes it really gets slow. Then blog gets slow too.<br>But it's very good to know, that Disqus try to fix speed.

Now I know what you meant by Disqus being slow. It's super slow today and it it holding up the loading of by blog posts. I've contacted @Disqus on Twitter, hopefully they respond quickly or I'll have to shut Disqus down! BTW, I didn't experience this slowness with Intense Debate's comment system.

Nice, it looks like that would permit the user to easily sign in but would it sync profile stuff between previously created self-hosted WP blog profiles and all relevant off-site profiles (i.e. Disqus, Intense Debate)? Just wondering what else it would do besides allowing for easy sign in. Thanks for the heads-up, it's the first time I've heard of RPX :)

regarding your point on "As a blog owner, if I could integrate Facebook Connect, Twitter Sign In, OpenID, push comments to Twitter/Facebook, and off-site comment retrieval within the default WP comment system I’d use it instead of ID or Disqus." What if they had used RPX (<a href="http://rpxnow.com" rel="nofollow">http://rpxnow.com</a>) for authentication which aggregates all the ones you mention above. RPX is already integrated into social networking platforms like KickApps.

I haven't experienced any slowness with Disqus and Intense Debate did a much better job of syncing comments compared to Disqus. I do feel that if Intense Debate were to put a priority on social features it would win out over Disqus. But unless they could allow WP plugins to work across the Intense Debate commenting system, I would still prefer to use the default comment system as it allows for total comment customization.

That's a really interesting question Jon. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one currently. All I know is that when I logged into the blog, Intense Debate recognized me and I was therefore automatically signed in. After installing the Intense Debate plugin, I had to add my Intense Debate login credentials for the plugin to connect the two accounts and claim my blog.<br><br><br>I would be surprised if Intense Debate could indeed synchronize the commenter's username and password. This would require you to somehow claim your numerous login credentials across all the blogs you comment on. Instead, I imagine they are using the commenter's username and/or email address to identify the user's profile like Gravatar does.

Did you play with Intense Debate's Profile Sync feature at all? If I were starting a new site today, I'd definitely use this, but here's my problem: a lot of our blogs have the "You must be logged in" setting like you used to have here. So on those blogs, the people who comment have all gone through the trouble of signing up for an account through our WP site. If I switched to ID, would those accounts become useless when viewing the ID comments? Or can they use those same credentials to login as an Intense Debate commenter? It seems like the Profile Sync feature should deal with this, but I can't tell for sure. Does that make sense?

I tried both systems too, but now using default comment system.<br>First off all I had problems with sync. ID lost some my comments and didn't gave it back, so I turned it off. I don't think, that my commenters like blog, which loses comments of them. I don't like to lose comments too.<br>Later I tried disqus. Didn't have much problems with it, but this system was too slow and not so good as intensedebate.<br>So know I'm using default system and it's the best for me.
