Hopefully some of these features/functions will be implemented in the next update release of Android call Cupcake that’s rumored to occur sometime late in January.

1. Wireless Transfer of Files - How cool would it be to share music, photos, and other files wirelessly between devices? I currently can’t do this with the bluetooth abilities of the phone.

2. Screenshot App - This would enable me to take quick screenshots of my G1 and post or share them.

3. Record Video - I believe this ability is coming soon with the next update release of Android.

4. Record Phone Calls - This would be extremely useful for archiving your conference calls and for personal reference needs. I could see an app like this selling big time, especially if the app included the ability to search through the recordings!

5. Screen Recording App - Akin to <a href="http://tomuse.com/goto/Camtasia/1493/2"rel="nofollow" title="Camtasia" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Camtasia this app would permit someone to record video footage of the G1’s screen and couple it with an external audio input to capture the narrator’s voice. A non-app alternative to this would be to port the G1’s screen to a computer monitor and record it in real time using <a href="http://tomuse.com/goto/Camtasia/1493/3"rel="nofollow" title="Camtasia" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Camtasia.

6. Install Apps On Memory Cards - Currently we are limited to installing all apps by default to the G1’s internal memory source. With a relatively a small amount of memory available, you can quickly fill it up and cause your G1 to slow. To some extent I am okay with this limitation because I can’t load my phone with tons of useless apps that I never use. However, as the Android Market grows more apps that require larger storage requirements will be added and thus the need arises.

7. Local Radio App - This may not sound like a very pressing need but I can assure you that people still listen to their local radio stations and like to stay connected locally. Using my Moto Q, I use to access <a href="http://tomuse.com/goto/TheStreamCenter/1493/4"rel="nofollow" title="The Mobile Stream Center" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">TheStreamCenter and listen to my local radio stations but I can’t do that anymore using my G1. Moreover, at times when your power is out in your home and the tornado sirens go off, as they did today, local radio stations can provide you with the most up-to-date weather information that’s critical for your safety.

I tried multiple times to connect my G1 to my Mac via bluetooth or USB cable without any success. I even tried connecting to my virtual machine (Windows XP) running off of Parallels but that didn't work either. Fortunately after a few attempts I was able to make it work using a USB connection. Fortunately after a few attempts I was able to make it work using a USB connection. It totally makes sense once you’ve done it but its not at all intuitively designed.

This is what you need to do:

Connect your G1 to your computer using a USB cable

Watch the top of the screen on your G1 for a USB symbol to appear in the upper left hand corner

Tap the symbol and drag down the notification window just like you do when you get new notifications (i.e. texts, emails, etc.)

Tap on the notification that says “USB connected”

Select ‘Mount’

You can now use your G1 as an external drive and move files between your computer and your phone’s SD card. If you’re using Windows just go to My Computer and open the new Removable Disk (e.g. E or F). On the other hand if you’re using a Mac, the drive will appear on your desktop as “NO NAME”. Here you can create new folders (i.e. Music, Videos, Documents, etc.) to hold your songs, movies, photos, or documents. When you’re ready to move files between your computer and G1, just select and copy and paste them into the designated folder on your G1’s MicroSD card.

To remove your G1 in Windows, right click on the removable disk icon on the taskbar and select ‘Safely Remove Hardware’. A window will pop up with USB Mass Storage Device will appear and you just need to click on ‘Stop’. Then select ‘HTC Android Phone USB Device’ and click ‘OK’. You can now safely unplug your G1 and enjoy all your imported songs. To remove your G1 from a Mac, simply drag the ‘NO NAME’ drive on your desktop to the trash where an eject icon will appear and dismount it.

I know it all sounds like a lot to do, but it’s really simple after you do it for the first time. I also made it sound more complicated than it is by adding all the details. However, I’ve found that it’s always better to have more than enough detail rather than not enough when you’re creating a how-to article or providing instructions for something.

Notify.me - This is a notification service that alerts you of any new content that's added to an RSS feed. I've used Yahoo! Alerts, Yotify, and Google Alerts prior to testing and I can say without a doubt that Notify.me beats them all hands down in terms of the least amount of lag time. Using a test blog I measured the elapsed time between the instant an article was published to the RSS feed and the actual time the notification was received from Notify.me. In three separate tests, Notify.me alerts were delivered within one to four minutes after publishing. Alerts, Yotify, and Google Alerts prior to testing and I can say without a doubt that Notify.me beats them all hands down in terms of the least amount of lag time.

Thus perhaps, in part, less startup announcements diminish traffic by removing the media buzz that’s created by the startups, which there are less of, and the workers themselves, which have also been reduced due to all the layoffs. Furthermore, if your tech news site’s central focus is internet start-ups then I would expect it to take a greater hit in traffic versus those that cover a broader spectrum of technology related news. While this all sounds like pure speculation, I have included the actual traffic stats from Compete so you can check them out and decide for yourself.

As you can see, traffic is down across the boards in this graph for the month of November. Three out of five had experienced positive growth for the month prior and a clear upward trend in uniques is evident for most over the entire year.

All of these tech related sites have been able to successfully thwart off the drop in visitor traffic that the others have experienced. Gizmodo’s main competitor, Engadget (see Figure 3), is not displayed here because it too demonstrated a drop in unique visitors (-6.1%) for the month of November.

<script type="text/javascript"

Okay, so not everyone is experiencing the a reduction in monthly unique visitors and those that are seeing a drop in traffic aren’t affected to the same degree. Why isn’t there a more broad effect? Well, perhaps technology related sites that cover a broader range of topics are able to diversify their interests enough to defend against such vulnerabilities. We can see this for example in Wired (+22.1%), Digg (+4.6%), and CNET (+8.7%). Also, there are some tech related niche topics that appear to not be affected at all. Indeed, it seems that productivity and DIY focused sites like Lifehack, Lifehacker, and DumbLittleMan (14.8%) all grew in unique visitor traffic for the month of November.

So if there is indeed a downward trend of less readers logging on to visit these type of websites, what’s the reason? Is it because the economic decline of the tech market has yielded less startups and therefore there is less exciting news to be covered or is it because niche readers in this industry are turned off to such interests after being laid off themselves? Perhaps a simpler explanation is that laid off workers and everyone else throughout the entire U.S., regardless of their profession and online reading interests, are tightening up their wallets and dropping their ISP by choice or necessity. Another possibility is that web traffic for November is usually low anyway. Figures 5 and 6 below indicate that neither such scenario is likely given that 8 of the top 10 most popular websites in the U.S. demonstrated an increase in unique visitors for the past month.

Thus it does seem at least plausible that TechCrunch and other similar tech news sites, which put more of a focused effort into covering new internet startups, may be more suseptible to a loss in traffic if there are reductions in the total number of startups launching over a period of time.

It is interesting to note, however, that TechCrunch’s own network sites, TechCrunchIT (-14.3%), CrunchBase (-18.6%), and MobileCrunch (0.0%) are all experiencing either a loss in traffic or no gains at all. Meanwhile CrunchGear saw a 7.9% increase in the number of unique visitors for the same month.

I’ve been waiting for the ability to use Loopt since last year but it’s only been available on select phones (none of which I had at the time). I’ve just had about an hour to review it before posting this but so far it’s looking really great. The app offers all the Loopt features such as notifications when your friends are nearby, the ability to view one’s friend map and monitor traffic delays, and the ability to update your current location and status. It also permits intergration with your blog, your favorite websites, and popular online services like Twitter and Facebook.

Loopt apparently is now supported on more than 100 handsets including the iPhone and BlackBerry. Its availablity on the Android Market displays a strong vote of confidence in Android as a mobile OS platform, as Loopt is one of, if not the most dominant player in the location based social networking arena. This is all overshadowed however by this week’s earlier big news that the Open Handset Alliance, which promotes the use of the Android mobile operating system, added 14 new members included the world’s largest mobile operator, Vodafone. The addition of Loopt to the Android Market is still significant as it perhaps indicates that Android has reached its inflection point for other major mobile and online services like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter to quickly follow suit and soon offer their own Android application.

USB flash drives not only make data portability easy, but they also provide extra privacy and security. If used correctly, self contained programs installed on your flash drive can prevent snoopy coworkers, keyloggers, and hackers from accessing your private data.

Your passwords should vary across different web services and they should be strengthened by comprising them of long combinations of various numbers, symbols, and a mix of upper and lower case letters. Using a single password for every online account you use is dangerous because if someone cracks it at website A, they can now access your online account at website B, C, D, etc… It is especially important to make sure your email has a very secure password since it’s the central portal to you and your personal information. By hacking into that, someone could find out which bank you use, where you shop, the type of credit cards you use, and other valuable accounts to target.

There are some really fantastic applications available now that you can store on your portable drive to access at anytime and help you keep getting things done while your on the go. Here’s the list of my personal favorite portable applications:

Well, all I can say is that it’s about frickin’ time. I’ve been using the <a href="http://tomuse.com/goto/Remember_The_Milk/1098/1"rel="nofollow" title="Remember The Milk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Remember The Milk (RTM) Firefox add-on that fills this need as a sort of workaround for at least a year now. I’m not sure what took the Gmail workers over at Google so long to figure out this need considering Gmail is one of their best and most heavily used services but I’m very thankful it has finally been addressed.

You can do this by simply logging in to your Gmail account and clicking on the Gmail Labs icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Oh, make sure you are using the Newer Version and not the Old version of Gmail as you won’t be able to see it. The new Tasks feature should be at the top of the list of Gmail Lab features. You just need to enable it and then scroll down to the bottom of the page to save your settings.

To add a new task you just need to click on the Tasks link that’s located under Contacts in the left hand column. A small window will appear in the lower right hand corner where you can add, complete, rearrange, or delete your tasks. You can pop this window out and make it larger for easier viewing and minimize it for easy access as your working by clicking on the arrow key in the upper right hand corner of the task window. If you select the Actions link at the bottom of the task manager’s window you’ll see a few other commands that can be executed such as Indent, Help, Show tips, View completed tasks, etc. and in the lower right hand corner of the task window there’s small list icon that allows you to create and manage multiple task lists. The new Task feature does a few other things like like allowing you to assign emails as tasks simply by check marking them and selecting the “Add to Tasks” option in the “More Actions” feature at the top of your Inbox. You can also attach a note or a due date to your tasks by clicking on the arrow symbol to the right of the task.

Tasks for Gmail is very simple and it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles like RTM but because it’s already integrated into Gmail, easier to access, and will likely work on all browsers (not just Firefox like RTM) it should be a smashing hit. I’m now worrying about Remember The Milk and how many Gmail-RTM users will switch to the default Task manager that’s now available. I’m sure the hardcore RTM users will stay for the time being however, as the Gmail Tasks manager doesn’t display tasks in Google Calendar and they can’t be shared via email unlike the RTM solution. However, it most likely won’t take the Gmail developers long to integrate those task management features to further enhance user productivity and Gmail’s image as a gtd app.

Besides their great design abilities, pro ad designers also possess key marketing intelligence and programming knowledge to help you get the most out of your banner ad campaign. They will be able to create banners that accentuate your product or service through innovative and exemplary graphics that improve your brand’s awareness and produce greater advertising results.

Surprisingly, there aren’t that many providers that are solely dedicated to creating and designing web banner ads and I had to sift through a tons of printed banner ad creators until I found the ones listed below.
