Google Labs just released an experimental service called Google Voice Local Search. Basically it’s a free 411 service you can use to find local business phone numbers and addresses. To access it, just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone. You can use it to search for a local business by name or category, get connected to the business for free, and if you are using your mobile you can even get the details via a text message. I have been using 1-800-FREE-411 for about six months now and I must say Google’s free 411 service beats it hands down. Unlike 1-800-FREE-411, Google doesn’t make you listen to advertisements prior to searching and the automated voice recognition service is much more accurate. Thus you can get the information much quicker and more easily through Google’s free 411 service.

What I Like:

  • It’s free! No more $1.99 charge on my bill for each 411
  • No advertisements to listen to
  • Fast and easy to use interface
  • Connects you for free and Google doesn’t charge for SMS
  • What I Dislike:

  • Nothing, it obviously isn’t as good as a human operator on the other end of the phone but what do you expect for a free service?
